'War and Peace,' concert featuring Anna Netrebko part of Mariinsky Opera's DC visit

The visits to the Kennedy Center by the Mariinsky Opera and Orchestra from St. Petersburg have been major highlights of the past decade. The company's 2010 residency, again conducted by the magnetic, globe-trotting Valery Gergiev, will include a fully-staged, note-complete production of Prokofiev's "War and Peace" (March 6, 7), which would be reason enough to build interest.

This year, there won't be any other stagings (the economy affects everyone, you know), but Gergiev will lead complete performances of "Eugen Onegin" (Feb. 27) and "Boris Godunov" (Feb, 28) in concert form. There will also be concerts devoted to scenes from

other Russian operas: Rimsky-Korsakov’s "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh," Mussorgsky’s "Khovantchina" and Borodin’s "Prince Igor" (March 3); and an all-Tchaikovsky bill that includes excerpts from "Iolanta," "Mazeppa," and "The Queen of Spades" (March 4).

The starry news of the Tchaikovsky night is the participation of soprano Anna Netrebko in the "Iolanta" selections. She may be the best known of the Russian artists appearing on this Mariinsky visit, but you can count on many distinctive voices and, of course, a dynamic orchestra -- Gergiev has honed this company into quite a showcase.

The opera singer want by no means to expose herself at her marriage to the hype, believes the soprano's management. It was said that, there are no comments on the part of the artist to the many requests of journalists. According to the presenter repeats the Russian-Austrian soprano the piano recital only just on 17th August in Salzburg. Last sang the 37 year old for the first time the "Iolanta" at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, a dramatic character role out of a late Tchaikovsky opera. In the past was Netrebko indeed cluttered with plaudit of her extraordinary voice, but also critizised, cause there was reputed a lack of heart and soul at her interpretations.

Anna will sing the Iolanta once again on 28th September at the Mariinsky theatre in St. Petersburg. It's the same production like in Baden-Baden. The cast is not announced yet, and tickets are still available.

Kind und Karriere bringt Opernstar Anna Netrebko (36) souverän unter einen Hut: Vor den diesjährigen Sommerfestspielen im Festspielhaus Baden-Baden präsentierte sie sich am Freitag bestens gelaunt und ausgeruht.
«Mir geht es sehr gut», verriet die Künstlerin den Journalisten. «Ich verbringe viel Zeit mit meinem Sohn und teile auch das Zimmer mit ihm.» Wiegen- und Schlaflieder singt sie für den knapp elf Monate alten Tiago Aruã aber nicht: Denn bei Musik schläft der Sprössling nicht ein, sondern wird gerade munter.

«Außerdem habe ich mit Bedauern festgestellt, dass mein Kind keine Frauenstimmen mag, sondern eher Männerstimmen», erzählte der Star. Sie hat außerdem bemerkt, dass sich mit dem Muttersein ihre Stimme verändert hat: «Ich weiß nicht, woran es liegt; vielleicht hat sich der Körper verändert. Aber ich persönlich finde, dass meine Stimme größer geworden ist, seit ich Mutter bin.»

Das Muttersein steht der russischen Star-Sopranistin bestens: Im roten, figurbetonten Kleid und auf sehr hohen Abätzen zeigte sie Flagge für Frauen und signierte zwei 18-Liter-Weinflaschen, die zugunsten des Frauenhauses Baden-Baden veräußert werden sollen. Den Kurort lobte die 36-Jährige als «Paradies, in dem ich mich sehr, sehr wohl fühle». Auf die Frage, ob sie sich vorstellen könnte, hier zu heiraten, antwortete sie mit einem Lächeln: «Mal sehen.»

Anna Netrebko ist zum dritten Mal in dem baden-württembergischen Kurort. Im Rahmen der Sommerfestspiele, die vom 18. bis 27. Juli im Festspielhaus über die Bühne gehen, singt die Russin die Hauptrolle der blinden Königstochter Jolanthe aus Tschaikowskys letzter gleichnamiger Oper. «Ich hatte nur wenig Zeit, die Rolle einzustudieren. Aber das Werk berührt die Seele, so schön ist es», betonte Netrebko. «Beim Üben hatte ich immer wieder Tränen in den Augen.» Premiere ist an diesem Samstag.

Two world stars - Anna Netrebko and the bass-baritone Bryn Terfel: On 09th September will be the classical concert of the year. The advance sale starts tomorrow at the Hamburger Abendblatts' ticket shops.

At the christening of the cruiser "Mein Schiff" was she in Hamburg, but without singing. Now are "Elbklassik", the Hamburg-based subsidiary company of the concert promoter Peter Schwenkow, and the Hamburger Abendblatt taking Anna Netrebko for one concert to the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. On 09th September it's getting down there to a summit of that special kind: The Russian star soprano performs together with Bryn Terfel, the great Welsh bass-baritone, one of the most demanded exponents of his voice. Schwenkow could made this coup perfect after the by him organised Netrebko concert at the last friday at the Munich Königsplatz (14 500 audience). The advance sale for this evening starts on Friday morning at 08:00 a.m.

The singers' covenant was so short term, that the accompanying orchestra is not yet decided already, but till now only who will conduct the concert: the international seasoned maestro Emmanuel Villaume, who will become the director of the Slovenian philharmonics in September. Also the programme is not yet stipulated in all its particulars, but it could be geared to the Munich concerts' programme, where she was accompanied by the baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. There were in the first half exclusively sang acts of Russian composers - cutouts of Tchaikovsky's operas "Pique Dame", "Iolanta" and "Eugene Onegin"as well as Michail Glinka's "Ruslan and Lydmila". The second part was more international with acts of Strauss and Wagner as well as cutouts out of operas of Verdi, Puccini, Mascagni and Leoncavallo.

Anna Netrebko rehearsals currently at Baden-Baden for the premiere of Tchaikovsky's opera "Iolanta" on 18th July and gives a Liederabend with Daniel Barenboim at the Salzburger Festspiele on 11th August.

The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden announced today that Piotr Beczala will sing the Vaudemont in all 4 performances of Iolanta in July. The translated announcement:

After Rolando Villazón cancelled with a heavy heart the "Iolanta" production, we can happily announce you today, that Anna Netrebko will have a fantastic tenor next to her in summer: Piotr Beczala. The Polish singer came already once a few days ago as the "white chevalier" to rescue Anna Netrebko. He stood in for Rolando Villazón in the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor", which was on the New York Met's schedule and broadcasted live in cinemas all over the world. Piotr Beczala came, sang, conquered. Audience and critics acclaimed the singer rightly. The New York success could recur in Baden-Baden. Piotr Beczala already knows the role of "Vaudemont" in Tchaikovsky's opera "Iolanta" and is looking very forward to his debut at the biggest german opera house. The lyrical tenor was born and skilled in south Poland. Regularly commitments drive him to the London's Convent Garden opera, the San Francisco opera, to Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich. In 2006 he made his debut at the Milan's Scala and the New York's Metropolitan Opera, too.

Villazón abandons Netrebko

Rolando Villazón called the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden off. The role in the opera "Iolanta" doesn't suit him. Anna Netrebko is for now without a duet partner.

The mexican tenor Rolando Villazón cancelled his participation in the opera production "Iolanta" at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. The singer constitutes this move in a letter within, that the role of Vaudemont doesn't suit in the repertoire, on which he wants to concentrate on in the next time, like the Festspielhaus notifyed on Thursday. Who will now sing next to the russian soprano Anna Netrebko, who sings the title role in the Tchaikovsky-opera, wasn't known already.

In defiance one "Werther"

The opera is scheduled on 18th, 21st and 24th. The musical director is Valery Gergiev. The Festspielhaus offers ticket owners, to give back their aquired tickets by price recompense. But he reckons, "that a lot of opera friends will already come just because of Netrebko, Gergiev and the ensemble of the St.Petersburgs' Mariinksy theatre and forgive Rolando the cancellation", said director Andreas Mölich-Zebhauser.

As consolation it should now give a third appointment for the concertant performance of the opera "Werther" by Jules Massenet on 14th June with Villazón and Elina Garanca. The two performances on 7th and 10th are like the Festspielhaus said already sold-out.

This was already a very big shock for me, but then I red at the New York Times (click here for reading the whole article) that Rolando will not sing Lucia on Saturday and that he will be replaced by Piotr Beczala ! OMG what a day ?! Have no more words for all this at the moment...
