For a long time I haven't been writting anything about Rolando, because - I don't know if you can understand that - I don't understand him anymore. I cannot understand why he does things and why he does them in the way he does (Must sound quite confusing ^^) The actual reason for posting this is, that Rolando had to discontinue his concert today in Kopenhagen due to a flu he's getting. After the break it was announced that Rolando is already at the hotel. During the first part he tried his best to finish the concert, but it didn't work...

Die Website United Charity organisiert Auktionen für Kinder in Not. Dabei werden Erlebnisse und besondere Objekte versteigert, die man für gewöhnlich nicht kaufen kann, etwa „Meet & Greets“ mit Prominenten, signierte Gegenstände oder ausgesuchte Raritäten. Hi everybody out there,

I know I haven't been here for quite a long time and you're maybe all kind of a bit "disappointed", but I have to state: Yes, I still love opera, I still love Anna (well and yeah also Rolando, even if "our relation is a bit difficult at the moment ^^) and I still love my blog =)
The reason why I am not really blogging at the moment is first that I have a lack of time, you know I go to a foreign language school now and I have to learn a lot. Spanish is completely new for me (nevertheless I've learned French for 5 years...) and we just have 2 years for learning how to speak it like a professional - so a lot of work in front of us ^^
And the second (most important) reason is that I don't have the feeling anymore that my blog is "useful" 'cause there are so many other great blogs e.g. The Anna fan blog etc that there is no need for my one. They all have much more information then I do, so.....

But let me shout out why I am actually writting: Jonas ! *yeah* :D I will be on his concert in Munich next Tuesday ! How cool is that ?! Will anybody of you be there too ? Comment it below ! =)
I think it'll be once again a really great experience, especially because I have an operated foot ^^ I'm going to write a "review" about the concert and make a lot of photos, like you are used to it =)

Wie Anna Netrebko die Berliner verführte (How Anna Netrebko seduced the people in Berlin)

Anna Netrebko - ohne Opernorchester, nur begleitet am Klavier von Daniel Barenboim. Die Berliner konnten am Montagabend die Primadonna in der längst ausverkauften Philharmonie pur erleben. Und sie verzauberte das Publikum mit ihrem Charme und vor allem mit vielen leisen Tönen. (Anna Netrebko - without opera orchestra, only accompanied by Daniel Barenboim on the piano. The people in Berlin had the possibility to hear the primadonna pure on Monday evening at the already for a long time sold-out Philharmonie. And she enchanted the audience with her charme and above-all her quiet tones.)

Diese Primadonna ist nach wie vor ein Ereignis: Anna Netrebko füllt locker die Philharmonie – und das mit weitgehend ungehörten Liedern von Rimsky-Korsakov und Tschaikowsky. Und auf Russisch. Irgendwann muss Klavierbegleiter Daniel Barenboim aufstehen und das Publikum bitten, nicht zwischen den einzelnen Romanzen zu klatschen.

La Netrebko braucht die Zurückhaltung, um sich in die melancholischen Miniaturen einzuschwingen. Das gelingt ihr wundervoll.

Die Netrebko, das Glamour-Girl der Klassik, kann sich auf ihren kultivierten, in den Höhen angenehm strahlenden Sopran, der seine russische Herkunft bei diesen Liedern natürlich nicht verleugnen will, verlassen.

Die ihr eigene lyrische Dunkelheit kann sie in den Kunstliedern der beiden russischen Großkomponisten vollmundig ausleben. Sie zelebriert die Grundstimmungen der russischen Seele. Manche könnte schillernder ausgedeutet sein.

Sie verführt mit dem Netrebko-Charme und vor allem mit vielen leisen Tönen. Am Ende jubelt das Publikum. Leider gibt es nur zwei Zugaben. Das löst Unmut beim Publikum aus. Genau genommen ist das das schönste Kompliment.

Comeback der schönen Mama (The beautiful mama's comeback)

Da ist sie also wieder. Frisch aus der Babypause. Rosiger und runder, als wir sie kennen. Nach ihrem Auftritt bei "Wetten dass...?", der Millionen Zuschauer begeisterte, präsentierte sich Anna Netrebko gestern an der Seite von Daniel Barenboim in Berlin. Und wie!

Im schulterfreien weißen Blümen-Kleid wickelte die 38-jährige Diva aus St. Petersburg die Zuhörer in der Philharmonie sofort um den Finger. Auf dem Programm: Lieder von Tschaikowsky und Rimsky-Korsakov, die auch auf ihrer neuen CD " In The Still Of The Night" zu hören sind, die sie mit Barenboim am Klavier eingespielt hat.Es war der erste Berlin-Auftritt der Diva nach der Geburt des kleinen Tiago Arua. Zuletzt hatte sie im November 2007 die Traviata an der Deutschen Oper gegeben. Im Herbst darauf kam der Nachwuchs. Jetzt ist Mama Anna wieder fleißig, viel unterwegs. Doch der Babyspeck, will irgendwie nicht weichen.Aber das stört doch niemanden. Vor uns steht eine in Schönheit erblühte Mama, die auch ihren Klavierpartner Barenboim beeindruckte. Neckisch, melancholisch, leidenschaftlich - die Netrebko bot alles, mindestens so gut wie in früheren Zeiten. Ihr Söhnchen scheint Annas berühmte Sopran-Stimme noch größer gemacht zu haben. Nicht schwierig, sich auszumalen, wem sie gestern das wunderschöne Wiegenlied von Peter Tschaikowsky widmete...

Comeback: Jubel für Rolando Villazón

Der mexikanische Startenor ist zurück: Nach gesundheitlich bedingter Karriere-Pause sang er in Donizettis "L'elisir d'amore" den Nemorino.

Die Opernwelt hat ihren intelligenten, robusten und zartfühlenden Tenor wie Latin Lover wieder: Rolando Villazon feierte Montagabend in der Wiener Staatsoper nach längerer gesundheitsbedingter Karriere-Pause sein Bühnen-Comeback. Er sang in Gaetano Donizettis "L'elisir d'amore" den Nemorino. Mit Erfolg, wie es der beinahe hysterisch anmutende Jubel seiner Fans bestätigte. Villazon seinerseits herzte sein Publikum symbolisch und ging vor seinen Fans sogar auf die Knie.

Wenn auch noch etwas auf Schonung bedacht, präsentierte sich Villazons Stimme beinahe wiederhergestellt. In der Liebestrank-Inszenierung von Otto Schenk aus dem Jahr 1980 ließ der Mexikaner keinen Moment aus, sein komisches Talent unter Beweis zu stellen. Jubel war bereits aufgebrandet, als er zu Beginn des ersten Akts die Bühne betrat und noch nicht einmal einen Ton gesungen hatte. Sehr zum Leid des Chors, dessen Leistung somit unterging.

"Meine Stimme ist zurück"

Ein vollständig verzücktes Publikum hinterließ Villazon im zweiten Akt, als er die Parade-Romanze "Una furtima lagrima" zum Besten gegeben hatte. Aber auch der minutenlange Jubel konnte keine Wiederholung erzwingen. Viel Applaus gab es auch für Villazons Bühnenpartnerin Ekaterina Siurina als Adina und Ambrogio Maestri als Doktor Dulcamara. Den Nebenbuhler Belcore sang Tae Joong Yang, Dirigent des Abends war Daniele Callegari.

Schon 2007 hatte Villazon, der zwei Jahre zuvor an der Seite von Anna Netrebko in der Salzburger Festspiel-"La Traviata" zum Star geworden war, aufgrund gesundheitlicher Probleme eine fünfmonatige Auszeit einlegen müssen. Villazon hatte im April 2009 erneut alle Konzerte abgesagt, weil er sich wegen einer Zyste an den Stimmbändern einer Operation unterziehen musste. Im November hatte der Sänger in einer Videobotschaft auf seiner Internetseite verkündet: "Meine Stimme ist zurück."

Zukunft

Mit Händel-Arien plant Villazon im April und Mai Auftritte in Baden-Baden, Hamburg, London, Paris und München. Bei den Salzburger Festspielen ist am 15. August ein Liederabend an der Seite der Pianistin Helene Grimaud vorgesehen.

Ich weiß ich hab schon lange, lange Zeit nichts mehr zu Rolando gesagt und mich auch nicht zu Dingen wie "Popstar to Operastar" oder "Tenor" geäußert...viele haben sicherlich darauf gewartet hier die neuesten Neuigkeiten zu lesen, da musste ich euch enttäuschen. Ich bin mir auch nicht so sicher, ob ich jetzt wieder über Rolando "bloggen" werde, nicht dass ich ihn plötzlich nicht mehr gut finden würde, aber irgendwie hatte und habe ich immer noch das Gefühl ich brauche "etwas Abstand" von der ganzen Sache. Seid mir nicht böse, der Blog "gammelt" im Moment ziemlich vor sich hin, ich würde selbst wenn ich wollte würde ich zeitlich gar nicht dazu kommen so intensiv wie früher zu bloggen, andere Dinge haben einfach Vorrang...nichts desto trotz: Ich wünsch dir viel Glück Rolando ! Ne...eigentlich wünsch ich dir einfach nur viel Spaß, denn Glück brauchst du nicht, du hast es eh drauf....

Was Steffi Graf und Andre Agassi 2007 gelang, das schaffte Angela Merkel 2009: Sie hat "der Zeitgeschichte einen prägenden Stempel gegeben". Dafür bekam sie nun den Deutschen Medienpreis.

Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel ist mit dem Deutschen Medienpreis ausgezeichnet worden. Sie steht damit in einer Reihe mit ihren Vorgängern Helmut Kohl und Gerhard Schröder. Die 55-jährige Regierungschefin werde für ihre Berechenbarkeit und Verlässlichkeit geehrt, begründete die Jury ihre Entscheidung. Die Laudatio auf die CDU-Vorsitzende hielt in Baden-Baden die russische Star-Sopranistin Anna Netrebko.

Laut Media Control war es das erste Mal, dass Netrebko "zu einem derartigen Anlass eine Rede" hielt. Das Marktforschungsunternehmen hatte den Preis 1992 ins Leben gerufen.

Merkel stelle in der Außenpolitik die Partnerschaft in den Vordergrund und setze sich konsequent für die Menschenrechte ein, sagte Karlheinz Kögel, Gründer von Media Control. Merkel sei für ihn eine "zentrale Orientierungsfigur in der Politik".

Stempel der Zeitgeschichte

Der Deutsche Medienpreis wird seit 1992 von Media Control verliehen - frühere Bundeskanzler konnten mithin nicht in den Genuss einer Verleihung kommen. "Der Preisträger wird durch eine breit angelegte Befragung von Media Control ermittelt", heißt es auf der Website des Preises. "Befragt werden die Chefredakteure der reichweitenstärksten und einflussreichsten Medien in Deutschland. Auswahlkriterium bleibt die Frage, welche Persönlichkeit hatte im abgelaufenen Jahr eine herausragende Bedeutung oder hat der Zeitgeschichte einen prägenden Stempel gegeben." Für 2007 ermittelten die Experten beispielsweise Steffi Graf und Andre Agassi, für 2006 den spanischen König Juan Carlos.

Merkel selbst lobte vor prominenten Gästen aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Unterhaltung die Bedeutung der Medien auch für den Fall der Mauer und den steten Kampf um die weltweite Achtung der Menschenrechte. "Die Medien haben geholfen, dass die Freiheit nicht aufgehalten werden kann." In ihrer Zeit in der DDR sei vor allem durch die Berichterstattung in den westlichen Medien deutlich geworden, wie überlegen die freiheitlichen Systeme gewesen seien. "Es war damals für uns wichtig und es ist heute wichtig, dass wir Menschen nicht vergessen oder sie verloren geben", sagte Merkel und verwies unter anderem auf die politische Lage in China.

"Nicht aufzuhaltende Frau"

In einer Video-Botschaft aus den USA sagte US-Außenministerin Hillary Clinton, Merkel sei eine "nicht aufzuhaltende Frau". Clinton hatte den Medienpreis 2004 selbst erhalten. Damals hatte Merkel die Laudatio gehalten. Jetzt lobte die US-Außenministerin Merkel: "Sie hat alles getan, um in der Politik etwas zu erreichen."

Merkel hat bereits seit Jahren den Ruf, eine "Medienkanzlerin" zu sein. Ihr Biograf Gerd Langguth sagte im vergangenen Oktober, im Unterschied zu Kohl sei sie eine Medienkanzlerin, "viel mehr als Schröder". Und er sagte voraus, dass Merkel dauerhaft nicht bei den Medien in Ungnade fallen werde: "Nicht nur die Kanzlerin braucht die Medien, auch die Medien brauchen die Kanzlerin."

Sopranistin soll nach Sohn Tiago Arua wieder guter Hoffnung sein.

In Opernkreisen rumort es immer lauter: Sopran-Star Anna Netrebko (38) erwarte ihr zweites Kind! Nur eineinhalb Jahr nach der Geburt von Sohn Tiago Arua soll sie wieder in guter Hoffnung sein. Vielleicht ein Grund, dass sie bei der Premiere ihrer besten Freundin Natalia Ushakova an der Volksoper trotz Vorankündigung dann doch nicht blicken hat lassen.

"Unter ihren Kollegen ist die Schwangerschaft längst Gesprächsthema", flüstert ein Insider gegenüber ÖSTERREICH. Papa ist auch dieses Mal ihr vermeintlich schon längst geheim angetrauter Ehemann Erwin Schrott (37).

Berufung in der Muterrolle
Die Operndiva selbst betonte schon oft, in der Mutterrolle eine neue Berufung gefunden zu haben und ihre Karriere an den großen Opernhäusern von Wien bis New York der Erziehung ihres Sohnes hinten an stellen zu wollen.

Derzeit singt Netrebko an der Met in New York. Ab 5. April steht sie in La Bohéme an der Wiener Staatsoper auf der Bühne. Dann wird man sehen, ob sich unterm Kostüm ein Bäuchlein wölbt.

Wohnglück mit Hindernissen

Stellen Sie sich vor, Sie investieren Millionen in die Immobilie Ihrer Träume. Abgesehen davon, dass man das Geld erst einmal haben muss, will man nach getanem Kauf nur eins: sofort einziehen ins nigelnagelneue Luxusdomizil.

Wurde Anna hereingelegt?

Das wünschte sich wohl auch Opernstar Anna Netrebko, als sie vor knapp zwei Jahren den Kaufvertrag für ihr 260 Quadratmeter großes Penthouse am Wiener Franziskanerplatz unterschrieb. Doch es blieb ein frommer Wunsch. Trotz der drei Millionen Euro, die sie für Kauf und Sanierungsarbeiten ausgab, bleibt das Penthouse vorerst eine Baustelle – und Anna Netrebko bis auf weiteres in ihrer alten Wohnung oberhalb des Gartenbaukinos. Der Grund für die Verzögerungen sind laut Branchenkennern langwierige Umbaugenehmigungen und der zum Teil desolate Zustand des Penthouse.

Augenzeugen berichten etwa von schimmeligen Parkettböden – weshalb ein Mitinteressent der ersten Stunde stutzig wurde und Netrebko seinerzeit den Kaufvortritt gab. In der Immobilienszene spricht man hinter vorgehaltener Hand längst davon, dass Netrebko gelinkt wurde. Sie habe sich damals, bei der ersten Besichtigung, sofort in den wunderbaren Blick verliebt, den man von der 50-Quadratmeter-Terrasse direkt auf den Stephansdom hat. Leider hat die schöne Aussicht offenbar von ein paar unschönen Kleinigkeiten abgelenkt, die der Diva jetzt zu schaffen machen.

Sorry das ich im Moment überhaupt keinen Bock auf Übersetzen und so hab ! Total komisch eigentlich, jetzt wo ich es richtig lernen würde jeweils von Deutsch zu Englisch und vice versa, mag ich das zuhause überhaupt nicht mehr machen ^^ Und ich wäre ja notenmäßig wirklich nicht schlecht *freu* heute erst ne 2+ in Übersetzen Deutsch-Englisch rausgekriegt =))) Hoffentlich wirds morgen auch gut in Ü E-D....

Deutscher Medienpreis für Angela Merkel

Wegen ihres Einsatzes für Menschlichkeit, Würde und Recht wird Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel mit dem Deutschen Medienpreis 2009 ausgezeichnet. Den Preis erhält sie aus den Händen von Opernstar Anna Netrebko.

Die CDU-Vorsitzende werde den Preis am 9. Februar in Baden-Baden entgegennehmen. Die Laudatio hält Opernstar Anna Netrebko, wie das von Preisstifter Karlheinz Kögel gegründete Unternehmen Media Control am Freitag mitteilte. «Im Mittelpunkt ihres politischen Denkens und Handelns steht stets der Mensch. Die Würde und die Rechte des Individuums leiten Angela Merkel bei ihren politischen Entscheidungen, die geprägt sind von Berechenbarkeit und Verlässlichkeit», begründete die Jury ihre Wahl.

In der Außenpolitik verfolge die Kanzlerin einen Kurs, «der die Partnerschaft in den Vordergrund stellt, ohne dass sie die manchmal notwendige Konfrontation scheut». Ihr Einsatz für Menschenrechte, für die Wahrung der Schöpfung und eine freiheitliche Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftsordnung habe ihre Wurzeln in der Biografie Merkels, heißt es weiter. Die Jury besteht aus Chefredakteuren der reichweitenstärksten Medien.

Die Preisverleihung, bei der Operndiva Anna Netrebko als Laudatorin auftreten wird, findet in Baden-Baden statt. Geladen sind laut Media Control etwa 150 Persönlichkeiten aus Politik, Wirtschaft, Medien und Kultur. Mit dem Deutschen Medienpreis wurden bisher unter anderen Nelson Mandela, François Mitterrand, Jassir Arafat, Jizchak Rabin, Kofi Annan, König Juan Carlos von Spanien und im vergangenen Jahr der Dalai Lama ausgezeichnet.

The visits to the Kennedy Center by the Mariinsky Opera and Orchestra from St. Petersburg have been major highlights of the past decade. The company's 2010 residency, again conducted by the magnetic, globe-trotting Valery Gergiev, will include a fully-staged, note-complete production of Prokofiev's "War and Peace" (March 6, 7), which would be reason enough to build interest.

This year, there won't be any other stagings (the economy affects everyone, you know), but Gergiev will lead complete performances of "Eugen Onegin" (Feb. 27) and "Boris Godunov" (Feb, 28) in concert form. There will also be concerts devoted to scenes from

other Russian operas: Rimsky-Korsakov’s "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh," Mussorgsky’s "Khovantchina" and Borodin’s "Prince Igor" (March 3); and an all-Tchaikovsky bill that includes excerpts from "Iolanta," "Mazeppa," and "The Queen of Spades" (March 4).

The starry news of the Tchaikovsky night is the participation of soprano Anna Netrebko in the "Iolanta" selections. She may be the best known of the Russian artists appearing on this Mariinsky visit, but you can count on many distinctive voices and, of course, a dynamic orchestra -- Gergiev has honed this company into quite a showcase.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky & Anna Netrebko, Royal Festival Hall, London

They made for an interesting couple: he, svelte and knowing, his black velvet tails and shock of silver hair suggesting he might briefly have taken leave from Twilight or some other nocturnal vampire tale; she, girlishly innocent and ripe for his attentions.

He had maturity on his side, she a completely fabulous instrument and the joy of just simply singing. But not even Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Anna Netrebko could turn an operatic pick-and-mix evening into more than the sum of its parts. From Russia with love, certainly, but how seduced were we by the gift-wrapping?

They both opted for difficult openers. Hvorostovsky chose Wolfram’s “Abendstern” (“O Star of Eve”) from Wagner’s Tannhauser and not even his famed technique could disguise the fact that this difficult legato sits on the fault-line of the voice between chest and head. And why was he smiling, no beaming, so benignly? That’s the problem with removing operatic arias from their dramatic context: suddenly it’s all about putting your best face and voice forward and making an impression for that moment only – a snap-shot, nothing more.

Netrebko arrived with Strauss’ ecstatic wedding gift to his wife Pauline – the love song “Cäcilie” - delivered in gorgeous tone and terrible German. Again the words seemed secondary to a more generalised preoccupation with making a truly grateful sound – and that she did. The evenness and creaminess of that sound throughout the vocal compass is not given to many. But then again the “cover” of the sound can and did dull the sparkle of Marguerite’s “Jewel Song” from Gounod’s Faust. Trills and roulades were somewhat occluded where they need to twinkle knowingly and I’m not sure Netrebko really understood the irony implicit in the number any more than she understood the effect of the ache in the phrasing of “Song to the Moon” from Dvorak’s Rusalka. But she sure knew that the money note was the high B natural at the close.

Hvorostovsky had his “Faust” moment, too, and if you are going to “sell” Valentin’s “Avant de quitter ces lieux” (an eleven o’clock number if ever there was one) then this is the way to do it – with burnished legato and heart-swelling climaxes. His other big party piece (and this really does sit well on its own) was Yeletsky’s Aria from Tchaikovsky’s La Pique Dame – and the long-breathed way it slipped off the vocal chords (his breath control really is second to none) was as good a reason as any for being there.

Actually, the duets were, too. Two extended scenes from Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin gave the chemistry between them a chance. Nedda and Sylvio’s close encounter was shrouded in uncertainty, the inevitable kiss furtively illicit, while the scorching final encounter between Tatyana and Onegin was full of the passion that comes too late, its still centre of regret touchingly caught by both artists.

It’s easy to overlook the orchestra and conductor on these starry showcase occasions – but Lawrence Foster and the Philharmonia Orchestra did a good job with the orchestral “grouting”, Foster bolstering up his stars and even playing hard to get when Netrebko began her now signature flirtations with Lehar’s “Meine lippen sie kussen so heiss”. Hvorostovsky’s answer was to smoulder provocatively with “Moscow Nights”. And I was thinking Twilight again.

Anna Netrebko has crowd eating out of her hand

Forget chalk and cheese, Anna Netrebko and Dmitri Hvorostovsky are fire and ice, she the tempestuous soprano, he the upright, occasionally rather stiff baritone. They both look as if they're preparing for a residency in Vegas, but the opera house is their home, and they make a good team. Sadly, too much of their concert kept them apart.

First there was the Philharmonia under Lawrence Foster, delivering a sequence of voiceless showpieces scattered through the programme, half an hour all told, surely too much in the context. Then there were the solo items, designed to show off each singer's range.

Hvorostovsky singing Wagner counts as a rarity, but while it was good to hear Abendstern from Tannhäuser sung with such free-flowing lyricism, there were moments when the voice seemed corseted so as to keep it from spreading. Then Netrebko sang Strauss's short song Cäcilie as a full-blown operatic aria, in the process revealing a slight edge to the voice. Only when the two at last sang together did the real action begin. A searing duet from I Pagliacci set the sparks flying, revealing their different vocal personalities: Hvorostovsky brooding, Netrebko glittering fiercely but with a deep substrate of sadness. Both have the ability to sustain a smooth singing line; if not quite as even as it once was, Hvorostovky's legato is astonishing, but she's the better actor and has more moods at her disposal. Then it was back to singing solo, Netrebko fizzing in a vocal waltz by Luigi Arditi, Hvorostovsky altogether darker as Verdi's Rigoletto. This was what we'd come to hear: passion, pathos and more than a little menace. Hvorostovsky even allowed himself the gentlest of sobs. Finally we got to Tchaikovsky, and even those of us who don't speak a word of the language could feel the extra immediacy of Russian singers on their home turf. The closing duet from Eugene Onegin might have been written for them; even their age difference (he a decade older than her) fitted the drama. A few signs of vocal wear only served to underline the characters' vulnerability. If two duets seemed rather short measure, nobody was complaining.

Of course there were encores, and once again Netrebko came out on top, irresistibly girlish and dancing barefoot in Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss, the big hit from Lehár's Giuditta.

She had the packed hall eating out of her hand.

Netrebko/ Hvorostovsky at the Festival Hall

It was a coincidence that the soprano Anna Netrebko and baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky were singing at the Festival Hall just a few days after Pop Star to Opera Star launched on television. But here it sometimes seemed as though it was the two Russians who were making the reverse journey. Glitz and bling were the order of the day. A glossy programme offered us plenty of promotional candy but little fibrous information (such as the words). And the amiable Lawrence Foster conducted the Philharmonia with a fervour that sang the word “filler” in rather large letters.

But there was substance here as well. Yes, Netrebko finished the evening dancing barefoot around the orchestra (Lehár’s Meine lippen sie küssen so heiss) and Hvorostovsky, who had been smouldering so aggressively all evening that at times he threatened to self-combust, finally blew open the doors of kitsch with Moscow Nights. They had, however, both earned the right to let their hair down.

Netrebko is the more nuanced performer. Her opener, Strauss’s Cäcilie, was an odd choice. But the coos of delight she sprinkled across the Jewel Song from Faust made up for the heavy coloratura, and by the time her darkly powerful soprano had revved up to a raptly intense Dvorák’s Song to the Moon she was showing the full force of her charisma. And that was without the hoofing.

Hvorostovsky remains a performer whose technical gifts — plush tone, formidable legato — can come at the cost of theatrical engagement: numbers from Tannhäuser, Faust and Rigoletto were stylish but underinflected. Matched with Netrebko or singing in his native language, however, and it was another matter. A steamy duet from Pagliacci struck properly verismo sparks. Hvorostovsky uncorked a majestic rendition of Yeletsky’s aria from The Queen of Spades. And the two were simply sensational in the final duet from Eugene Onegin, etched with idiomatic flair and ripely dramatic conviction. I’ve never heard it sung better.

Startenor Rolando Villazón nimmt in Berlin eine CD mit mexikanischen Liedern auf

die Opernwelt jubelt: Auf welchen Bühnen Rolando Villazón in den kommenden Monaten auftreten wird, hat der mexikanische Startenor jüngst mitgeteilt. Was er noch nicht verraten hat: Im März 2010 wird Villazón eine neue CD einspielen. Die Information dazu steht bescheiden zurückhaltend auf der Internetseite der Bolivar Soloists: „2010 folgen eine CD-Produktion und eine Tournee mit dem mexikanischen Tenor Rolando Villazón für die Deutsche Grammophon.“

Dabei handelt es sich um ein Album mit mexikanischen Liedern, wie Efrain Oscher, Leiter des Kammermusikensembles Bolivar Soloists, am Rande eines Konzertes der lateinamerikanischen Musiker in Berlin verriet. Villazón wollte schon seit langem eine CD mit mexikanischer Musik aufnehmen: „Das ist die Musik, mit der ich aufgewachsen bin, die mich geprägt hat. Ich habe große Lust diese Lieder zu singen“, sagte er in einem Interview 2008. Auf die Frage: „Wann?“, antwortete Villazón: „Schon sehr bald.“ Aber dann kam die Operation an einer Stimmbandzyste dazwischen.

Nun ist Villazón zurück und die Termine stehen fest. Efrain Oscher: „Villazón hatte seine Plattenfirma auf die Suche geschickt, eine Begleitband zu finden. Er wollte kein großes Orchester und keine Folkloremusiker.“ Die Solisten, die sich nach dem venezolanischen Freiheitshelden Simón Bolívar benannt haben, spielen in klassischen Orchestern und haben (fast) alle lateinamerikanische Musik im Blut. Oscher, in Uruguay geboren und in Venezuela aufgewachsen, lebt in Bremen. Er ist ein hervorragender Flötist und Komponist, wie er in Berlin im Ibero-Amerikanischen Institut mit der Uraufführung seines Stücks „Alexander von Humboldt und die Klänge der venezolanischen Landschaft“ bewies,

Rolando Villazón kündigt auf seiner Website für Juni eine Konzertreihe in Mexiko an, gewissermaßen die Generalprobe vor kundigem Publikum, bevor im Herbst die Deutschland- und Europatournee folgen soll.

Les contes d'Hoffmann review - 19th December 2009

"My wife Paula and I attended the Les Contes d'Hoffmann performance at the MET on
19-December which was also simulcast around the world as a live broadcast. As
snow was encroaching on New York City, the crowds came out to see the Tales of
Hoffmann. I totally agree with Irina, that there is truly nothing like a live
performance, although this spectacle deserves a second review with the encore HD
performance in January. Although there were some vacant seats due the inclement
weather it was clear that Netrebko has her devoted following. The gift shop was
playing a DVD of her Berlin Concert with Villazon and Domingo and copies were
literally flying off the shelves. One woman flew in from Dallas just for this
performance. The MET intentionally sanitized this production leaving out the
partial nudity (G strings and pasties) reviewed by Anthony Tommasini of the New
York Times.

There was a rousing ovation for James Levine who recently returned from back
surgery for a ruptured disc. He has the uncanny ability to allow the orchestra
to support, but not overpower the singers. Bartlet Sher the director pretty
much took a static opera with no dimension of time or change of venue. and made
a spectacle of the opera. While there were some incongruities, it pretty much
came off rather well and was very well received. Olympia, the mechanical doll
played by Kathleen Kim was adorable, cute and sang with coloratura ease. She
danced and walked like a mechanized doll as the voice lifted just like a young
adolescent nymph. This was not the role for Netrebko. Although other
productions have had wind up keys built into the costume, this rendition was
just adorable. Ekaterina Gubanova as Giuletta was stiff and uninspiring. The
part of Nicklausse sung by Kate Lindsay was just average, as her voice and
expression appear not ready for prime time. Alan Held had a commanding presence
as Dr. Miracle and sang with convincing authority. The clear winners of the
afternoon were Joseph Calleja as Hoffmann and Anna Netrebko as Antonia. Calleja
displayed confidence, presence and endurance. His voice has an unusual
tenderness and affection that is reminiscent of Jussi Bjorling. Calleja had
strength, the ability to project and literally sang the entire opera without
much rest. His tenderness in recounting his lost loves came across with passion
and conviction. This is an enormous role early in his career and it was clear
that he was up to the task. Although Anna Netrebko's role as Antonia in the 2nd
act was limited, she ruled the stage with passion, illumination and exquisite
acting ability. One only has to think of her Salzburg Traviata for an analogy.
Her deep Slavic tone and elegant poise was well suited to this role. She truly
commanded the stage and all around her. Her duets with Hoffman were poignant,
elegant and dramatic. She had the ability the sing along with his commanding
presence. She was dressed in a beautiful nightgown that highlighted her style,
grace and sumptuous figure. It is evident that she has lost much weight after
her pregnancy, but her voice and timbre have become richer, more colored and
exquisite. There were time when you could pick out her voice on top of the
chorus. She has not lost her high register at all and there were some hints of
exquisite trills in her singing. In short, this role was made for her, a
sumptuous, melancholy lover with a great sense of pathos and drama.
At intermission, I met a gentlemen who was at her MET debut in War and Peace.
He said that he heard a lone voice above the chorus that transcended all. He
said that he knew then that she was very special as only time would demonstrate.
He loved her role here, but was not as enthusiastic about her coloratura
capabilities in Lucia last year.

The production did have some weaknesses that seemed to detract from the overall
message. In the opening of the third act which simulated an orgy or bordello,
the well choreographed dancers with exquisitely flexible bodies were on top of
men reminiscent of strippers at a bar. Their modern day costumes seemed out of
place from the elegant victorian gowns and long coat worn by Hoffmann. My wife
found some of this mildly offensive and inappropriate. If this was the
sanitized version, I am sure that other performances had similar responses.
Parts of the opera appeared to make fun of the Jews and were mildly anti-Semitic
in nature. While not offensive, it is clear that Bartlet Sher chose to
highlight these issues in his interpretation. I found it to be mildly amusing
and perhaps this reflects some of Offenbach's beliefs.

Some general thoughts are in order. Having attended opera and concerts
throughout Europe, I am astounded by the lack of decorum of many participants in
the audience. On a Saturday afternoon where tickets are rather expensive, I am
shocked by people dressed in dungarees and sweatshirts. My opinion is that the
audience should be respectful to others in the audience as well as the
performers. People sitting next to me in the opera talked throughout the opera
and you could hear the incessant vibration of cell phone and occasional audible
ones that were extremely bothersome. As Hoffmann was singing his heart out in
the 3rd act, a cell phone went off at the most inopportune time. I realize that
times are much more casual than in the past, but a modicum of decorum,
appropriate dress and behavior is a rather low bar for such an exquisite art
form.

In closing our trip to NYC was well worth the effort. Netrebko was enchanting,
ravishing and skilled in her abilities. Our trip home was delayed by snow and
ice, but fortunately we had a young female bus driver that was safety conscious,
courteous and skilled in her driving abilities. She had to stop 4-5 times to
clear ice from the wipers. Fortunately she beat the storm as she traveled North
to Boston.

Looking forward to Boheme later this spring as well as Carmen with Garanca.

Der Star-Tenor Rolando Villazón wird seine Zwangspause am 22. März 2010 an der Wiener Staatsoper mit Donizettis "Liebestrank" beenden.

Anfang November wandte sich Rolando Villazón auf seiner Website via Videobotschaft an seine Fans, mit den Worten: "Meine Stimme ist zurück". Im April hatte der 37-Jährige alle Konzerte abgesagt, weil er sich wegen einer Zyste an den Stimmbändern einer Operation unterziehen musste. Mittlerweile steht fest, wo und wann der charismatische Mexikaner sein Bühnen-Comeback geben wird. Wie die Wiener Staatsoper am Montag in einer Aussendung bekanntgab, wird Villazón am 22. März 2010 in Donizettis "Liebestrank" singen.

Bereits nach seiner ersten fünfmonatigen Zwangspause im Jahr 2007 hatte sich Villazón für das Haus am Ring als Ort seines Comebacks entschieden. Mit ihrem gemeinsamen Auftritt in "Liebestrank" an der Staatsoper hatten Rolando Villazón und Anna Netrebko zudem 2005 den Medienrummel um das neue "Traumpaar der Oper" ausgelöst. Laut dem Spielplan der Staatsoper wird Ileana Tonca am 22. März die Adina an der Seite von "Nemorino" Villazón sein.

Weitere Auftritte in Villazóns Kalender

Laut Villazóns Management soll der Tenor weiters am 26. und 31. März sowie am 2. April an der Berliner Staatsoper in Tschaikowskis "Eugen Onegin" auftreten. Das berichtete das Magazin News via Aussendung. Es sollen Konzerte in Paris und Baden-Baden folgen, ehe er am 21. Mai mit in Jürgen Flimms "La Traviata"-Inszenierung in Zürich debütieren soll. Bei den Salzburger Festspielen, so News weiter, übernehme Villazón nicht den Romeo an der Seite von Anna Netrebko in Gounods "Roméo et Juliette". Dafür sei am 15. August ein Liederabend mit Pianistin Hélène Grimaud geplant.

The Old Stories, Updated With G-Strings

There is much to cheer about in the Metropolitan Opera’s phantasmagorical new production of Offenbach’s “Contes d’Hoffmann” (“Tales of Hoffmann”), which opened on Thursday night.

As conceived, this production was to have featured the tenor Rolando Villazón as the poet, wild-eyed dreamer and delusional lover Hoffmann. When Mr. Villazón, in the midst of a vocal crisis, pulled out last spring, the young Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, who had never sung this daunting role, accepted the assignment. On Thursday he gave his all, singing with ardor, stamina and poignant vocal colorings and winning a rousing ovation. There were technically shaky elements to his performance, and his focused, quick vibrato revealed every slight inaccuracy of pitch. Still, the insecurity actually befitted Mr. Calleja’s take on the character, laid bare emotionally.

The soprano Anna Netrebko may have disappointed her fans by deciding not to sing all four of Hoffmann’s love interests, as originally planned. But she was vocally lustrous, charismatic and wrenching as Antonia, the sickly and frustrated singer who has been warned that singing will lead to her death. She also made a captivating and tart Stella, the prima donna Hoffmann is smitten with.

And James Levine, in his first performance at the Met since losing some two months of work because of back surgery, received a prolonged ovation from a welcoming audience when he appeared in the pit. He then drew a supple and bewitching performance from the great Met orchestra.

Still, the post-premiere discussion will probably focus on the acclaimed director Bartlett Sher’s fantastical production. Mr. Sher proved himself to opera buffs with his sleek and charming 2006 production of Rossini’s “Barber of Seville,” in revival at the Met this season. “Hoffmann” is a far more challenging and elusive assignment.

For me, the staging is marred by moments of excess and busyness. And Mr. Sher may have done too much analysis of the work’s psychological subtexts. We get a little bit of everything in the stage imagery: pasty-faced characters out of a Kafka tale; waiters in bowler hats who could have stepped out of a Magritte painting; decadent, orgiastic Felliniesque scenes at the palace in Venice where the courtesan Giulietta presides; and more.

Yet Mr. Sher, working with the set designer Michael Yeargan and the costume designer Catherine Zuber, does get to the emotional core of the opera. This Hoffmann, dressed in a plain suit suggesting 1920s Eastern Europe, spends most of his days seated at a humdrum writing table, with a battered typewriter and a small desk lamp. That desk is where he belongs. At least that is the conviction of the Muse of Poetry, who in the guise of Nicklausse, Hoffmann’s devoted friend, follows him everywhere. The mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey, singing with warmth and subtlety and looking alluringly androgynous, makes a trustworthy muse.

Luther’s tavern, next to the opera house where Stella is starring in “Don Giovanni,” is the only public place where Hoffmann is in his element. During the Prologue, egged on by the students who frequent the tavern and hang on his stories, Hoffmann sings an impish ballad about the dwarf Kleinzach, which Mr. Calleja dispatched with snappy energy and ringing top notes.

After the Prologue, during the next three acts, all flashbacks, Hoffmann tells the students the stories of his three disastrous romantic obsessions. Mr. Sher makes clear that these really are tall tales. Imagery and characters bleed from one story into the others. In the workshop of the eccentric inventor Spalanzani (the hearty tenor Mark Schowalter), where the guests assemble to see the demonstration of Olympia, his mechanical doll, voluptuous women dressed in nothing but G-strings and pasties wander through the audience. Two acts later they are seen again as occupants of the palace of the Venetian courtesan Giulietta.

It makes sense that Hoffmann’s stories would become jumbled in his mind, and in his telling. Still, the act featuring Olympia is quite a jumble. This mechanical doll is one of a whole product line of dolls, who strut about in garish ballet dresses. Some of the guests seem to have drifted in from “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” The staging has style and wit, but it seems too busy, too much.

Ideally, Offenbach wanted one soprano to sing all four of Hoffmann’s love interests. Ms. Netrebko may have been wise to pass on Olympia. The role’s high-flying runs and roulades require a true, agile coloratura soprano, and this production has one in the petite Kathleen Kim, who excelled in Olympia’s showpiece aria, singing with pinpoint pitch, bright tone and impressive accuracy.

The mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova was a suitably dark-hued and sensual Giulietta, dressed incongruously in an 18th-century gown. The baritone Alan Held was husky-voiced, imposing and often chilling, portraying the four devilish villains who torment Hoffmann.

The tenor Alan Oke was delightful in four minor character roles, especially as Franz, the hapless servant in Antonia’s house who secretly longs to be a singer. (This was a far cry from his Met debut performance as Gandhi in Philip Glass’s “Satyagraha.”)

Whatever the vocal issues with Mr. Calleja’s Hoffmann, he withstood the pressure of singing this formidable role for the first time in a major new production at the Met, and saved the day. He needs to do more work with his voice, but he is a gifted and promising tenor.

There is an enormous controversy about the score of this opera. Offenbach died four months before the work’s 1881 premiere in Paris. None of the versions of the work that have appeared over the years, some of them corrupted, can be said to be authentic. I will have more to say on this question later. Mr. Levine, as is his prerogative, conducted a version that he and advisers at the Met fashioned from existing sources.

Whatever scholars of “Hoffmann” believe about the validity of the choices made here, the opera as presented had integrity and dramatic flow. If the production is not a revelation, the Met’s new “Hoffmann” is a musically gratifying and vividly theatrical staging of a haunting and, in its way, profound work.
